Samsung Galaxy J7 Duo is a new smartphone from Samsung that will be available soon in India. It has a very nice design with a dual rear camera. It looks a bit like a cheap Samsung Galaxy A8! But the A8 2018 had no dual rear camera like this new J7 Duo.
Also this new J7 Duo comes with a home button and two capacitive touch buttons on each side. Just as Samsung’s older phones used to have. So the fingerprint sensor is located on front in home button.
Main specs: 5.5 inch Display, 3000mAh Battery, 1.6GHz clocked Octa-core processor, Exynos 7885 Chipset, 4GB of RAM, 32GB Internal storage, 256GB expandable memory option, 13MP + 5MP dual rear camera, Android 8.0 Oreo, 8MP Front camera, 3.5mm audio jack, Bluetooth 5.0 and 4G support!
In terms of thickness Galaxy J7 Duo is fairly slim as well with 8.2mm thickness. The weight is 174 grams. I really hope that this phone will cost below 200 dollars since that will be very competitive price-range! It seems like it’s only available for now in a Black colour edition.
I would love Samsung to see them make a phone like Galaxy J7 Duo but with a 4.5 inch Display. It’s very rare we see that size in times like this. Everyone just wants to do stuff bigger all the time. Another thing that would be cool is if Samsung brought the Stylus to their low range devices. So more people could experience it. Since it truly adds something unique to the phone experience that others skip out on.
Samsung’s high end and mid range devices are starting to become pretty expensive. Samsung wants to move their prices up just like Apple does. Maybe in the future smartphones may start to cost around 1500 dollars for a high end phone. Especially if they find a way to implement VR gaming potential with a phone. With HTC Vive graphics! But that is still a few years until we would see.
Today I want to compare Samsung Galaxy S9 vs. Huawei P20 Pro. Both these two phone brands are my favourites. The first thing that is different in terms of design perspective is that the P20 Pro comes with an iPhone X notch at the top. Something many people dislike. This is a notch that many Android phone companies have started to copy and we may see an LG phone and OnePlus phone also come with a notch.
An interesting difference here is how the S9 comes with new Bluetooth 5.0 while the P20 Pro only has 4.2. This may be important to know if you listen to wireless sound with Bluetooth earphones since 5.0 has some nice improvements in technology.
Another major difference is P20 Pro comes with 4000mAh battery and S9 with only 3000mAh! This is something Samsung has been struggling with as of late. After the Note 7 fiasco with battery issues it feels like they are going the safe path by giving you less mAh just to be on the safe side. But people want a lot of mAh so their phone last a very long time.
A nice thing with the Galaxy S9 is how it gives you microSD card option to expand memory all the way up to 400GB. The Huawei phone has no option to expand memory.
A big difference between these two phones is how the Huawei phone comes with a triple camera on rear side. This is something that we have never seen in the past. 2017 was the big year for dual rear cameras. Perhaps 2018 will be the year of triple real cameras.
The secondary camera on Huawei P20 Pro comes with 24MP sensor while the S9 only has 8MP secondary camera. A bad thing with P20 is how it has no 3.5mm audio jack. The S9 comes with an earphone jack! Great for people that listen to stuff with wired earphones.
It seems like the Galaxy S9 gives you some extra screen protection with Gorilla Glass 5. My Huawei Mate 9 it’s screen broke very easy when I accidentally dropped it. So it seems like Huawei phones got lots of stuff to work on to make them stronger in the future.
In terms of display size it’s a bit bigger on the P20 Pro with 6.1” display the Galaxy S9 comes with 5.8” display. And S9 is then also a little bit lighter to hold in the hand. But many people would prefer a little bit heavier phone to get that premium phone feel experience. Both these phones have water resistance. But the Huawei phones is a bit slimmer which is a big deal for many.
Another problem with the Samsung phone is that the fingerprint sensor is still located too close to the rear camera. This has been a big problem on the Galaxy S8. It also has a design that isn’t rounded so it feels too small. Both the phones run latest Android 8.0 Oreo OS. And they both have Octa-core processor and very similar GPUs so gaming performance should be very identical.
To summarise: It mostly comes down to what brand you are most comfortable with using. And what design you prefer the most since the specs is very high end on both devices. Many Apple users will probably think you are an iPhone X fanboy if you buy the Huawei P20 Pro.
I wish both of these phones came with a built in stylus like Galaxy Note 8. Samsung has also a very useful Always-on-display that is super useful. Not sure if the Huawei phone comes with that. Could also be good to know that the P20 Pro comes with 6GB of RAM and Galaxy S9 only with 4GB.
It also seems like the P20 Pro phone has a home button at the bottom. It seems to be a real hardware button. Something that many people enjoy to have on front. Especially in these days when more companies are removing that feature.
The price is around the same for these two phones. Huawei is the new Apple I feel since they are very hungry and making gains fast in the phone world. And they produce quality phones compare to boring HTC, Sony and LG!
Samsung has started to work on a new chipset that will be available to handle 5G data speeds. Currently with the Galaxy S9 we have Exynos 9810 chipset. This new chipset that Samsung started to work on in January 2018 with 5G support is being called 9820. Just a slight difference in naming structure.
5G speeds will give us gigabit speeds and faster Internet. But it will be best for people that wants to download or stream things faster. Currently it’s hard to stream 4K YouTube videos for example since the video files are so large. But we are now getting both more powerful AI CPUs and GPUs for phones and we recently saw Huawei unveil the Huawei Mate RS Porsche Design that comes in a 512GB Internal storage edition. So soon streaming 4K videos will be smooth.
The rumors is they think 9820 will be built on Samsung’s 7nm EUV process. The Samsung Galaxy S10 may come with 5G support. But perhaps Samsung will change it’s naming structure since it starts to become a bit long after 10 phones.
2019 Qualcomm will come out with a new 5G Snapdragon modem that phones will be able to use. We are moving towards a future where everything constantly happens much faster. Which is very exciting. But clearly many people will be scared because new things being introduced could be very scary.
There is a great book speaking about this time that we live in it’s called The Great Acceleration by Robert Colvile. He speaks deeply about this and I highly recommend this book if you are more interested in this topic. Phones in terms of new features are starting to reach a peak.
In a few years we will see more Virtual Reality focus since that truly is the next level stuff. People are tired of looking down on a small screen. The next evolution will be something more smooth. I talked about HTC’s new VR headset a couple weeks ago. That one seems amazing! I really loved their first edition.
Today I did a benchmark comparison. I picked the brand new Samsung Galaxy A8 and the older flagship Samsung Galaxy S7 device. These phones are pretty similar in terms of specs.
The main key thing that is different in terms of build here is how the Galaxy S7 comes with a hardware button at the front and is a bit more rounded in design. The Galaxy S7 was a nice upgrade from the S6 because it brought back the water resistance that we first saw in Galaxy S5!
The new A8 here is also a good upgrade compared to the edition we saw a few years ago. Samsung is putting glass on their mid-range devices. Something they didn’t do a couple of years ago. It adds even more exclusive feeling but it also raise the price on their mid-range lineup.
Both of these two phones comes with an Exynos processor and Mali GPUs but different editions. The new Galaxy A8 also comes with Bluetooth 5.0 so should have better wireless audio. Another different thing is how the fingerprint sensor is located at the rear side on Galaxy A8!
The screen is also a bit bigger on A8 because people still want bigger display phones. But we are probably hitting the limit soon for how big screens could go. Both of these two phones have the same mAh in battery size. The Galaxy S7 is a little bit slimmer in terms of thickness. The A8 is around 20 grams heavier in weight.
I will probably do more videos like this where I use the jwplayer on my own website instead of uploading the video to YouTube. Since I have more control over my content on my phoneinf website. And it feels much better to have that extra freedom!
Samsung has finally unveiled their new high-end phone for 2018! It’s called the Samsung Galaxy S9. It might be the last S high-end phone from Samsung. They may change the letter structure! Let’s take a look what it gives you.
Main specs: 5.8 inch Super AMOLED Display with 1440×2960 pixel resolution screen, Corning gorilla glass 5 protection, Android 8.0 Oreo Nougat, Exynos 9810 Octa in Europe and Snapdragon 845 Chipset in USA, Octa-core processor with 4×2.8GHz Mongoose M3 and 4×1.7GHz Cortex-A55 in Europe and Octa-core 4×2.7GHz Kryo 385 and 4×1.7GHz Kryo 385 Silver in USA, Mali G-72 P18 GPU in Europe and Adreno 630 in USA, microSD support up to 400GB, 64/128/256GB models, 12MP Primary camera, 8MP secondary camera and 3000mAh non-removable battery!
The first thing that annoys me with this phone is how it still packs a rear fingerprint scanner which is too close to camera. Compared to the Galaxy S8 where the scanner was side by side with camera now they have moved it to be located under. This may be a better location. But I’m still annoyed how it doesn’t come with a rounded design. The design Samsung goes with is more annoying!
Another thing that is scary is the high price of 840 euro! Smartphones are getting super expensive these days and this is not even the premium edition! Back in Galaxy S3 days in 2012 a high-end phone used to cost around 600 euro. Sad to see how much they have raised the prices at the same time when they don’t really offer any major selling point.
This phone will come in 4 colours: Midnight Black, Coral Blue, Titanium Gray and Lilac Purple! Thankfully it still comes with 3.5mm audio jack. Thanks Samsung for not going full iPhone X. You can also record video in 2160p resolution at 60 frames per second.
Another big selling point is how it’s still IP68 water resistant same as earlier years with Samsung high-end phones. It does still come with glass back that may break easy. I hope Samsung adopt metal or plastic again in the future. Because they are better materials to use on a phone! It has a pretty low weight of just 163 grams!
