iPhone 8 vs. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 vs. LG V30 vs. Sony Xperia XZ1 Poll!

Audio Version:

So today I want to make a poll to see which phone you are looking forward to the most late 2017.

So we have four different new high end phones that will soon be released. Lets start by talking about the Apple iPhone 8. It’s expected to come with a 5.8″ OLED Display, Speedier A11 processor, Glass body, Edge-to-edge Display, Facial Recognition that probably will replace Touch ID.

So no fingerprint sensor on iPhone 8 seems like. Or home button. Because of the Edge-to-edge display. And wireless charging functionality. Something Android has been having for years.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be like a Galaxy S8+ but with a dual-led camera and an S-Pen. And a smaller battery! It will have either Exynos 8895 or Snapdragon 835. Both the iPhone 8 and Note 8 is suspecting to feature glass back. Which is bad for protection it can break easier than other materials. So it will probably be a good idea to wear a case with these phones. iPhone 8 will be running on Apple’s latest iOS 11 which currently is in beta. New Note 8 will run with Samsung Experience 8.1 and Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

The LG V30 is a new LG phone expected to be unveiled on August 30th a day before IFA 2017 Europe’s largest tech show opens up in Berlin on September 1.

This phone is expected to have 6″ QHD+ OLED Display, rounded corners, Snapdragon 835 (Same processor as Galaxy S8 and OnePlus 5 has), 3200mAh battery, some new “floating bar” (Quick access to shortcuts and notifications), dual-rear cameras for high-performance image capture. It will also feature HDR 10 and Google Daydream support. IP68 certification.

LG G6 was a phone I really enjoyed from LG and I bet this V30 phone will be even more awesome. Looks like they put a great deal of effort into an improved camera. Hopefully the phone won’t come with a glass back I can’t stand that material on a phone. But it probably will have a glass back.

Another rumored device to come soon is the Sony Xperia XZ1. We have some leaked photos already where you can see a device running Android 8. Sony is expected to unveil three new devices on IFA 2017. Sony Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact and X1. And based on the pictures we have seen then it looks like XZ1 may be Sony’s first device to have a fingerprint sensor on the back side. Just as other phone companies is doing. Sony usually only did this on the side button.

Sony still seems like they wanna go with their thick bezels trend with no Edge-to-edge style screen. Most other phone companies are starting to slim down their edges to only have a big display on the front. Not Sony. On the other hand it was a long time ago Sony used a home button on the front side. Something we now see other phone companies is starting to do, remove the home button. Only on-screen keys.

If I’m going to have to pick my favorite between all these four I will easily go for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. That is the one phone that stands out and has something the other phones don’t. A stylus to quickly be able to be creative and take notes. And draw things in a creative way. Apple is falling behind I think since 2013 in creativity. They don’t seem to have the same spark as they had with Steve Jobs.

For example these days other companies copy Apple’s design before they even release their product. This year both Essential PH-1 and Sharp Aquos S2 has done the iPhone 8 design and released their phone’s before Apple even announced their iPhone 8!

So there is little things that are special with Apple these days. Now you can get a Android phone with good specs and latest iPhone look for probably around 200 euro. It doesn’t make that much sense these days to pay 800 euro for a flagship device. But people will still do it. The new iPhone 8 also has this horrible traffic light design on it’s camera which I really don’t like

EverythingApplePro discussed about the Android copycats that stole the iPhone 7 design. Here is a number of phone’s copying the iPhone 7 Plus design. Oppo R11, Honor 8 Pro, OnePlus 5, Zenfone 3 Zoom, Honor V9, OUKITEL U20+, CUBOT Rainbow 2, UMIDIGI Z Pro, Ulefone Gemini Pro.

Now this just show’s that Apple need to find something new original thing to do because now people truly are catching up to them. Also many of these Android phones I mentioned here is fully high quality phones. That can do just as much as an iPhone but with a lower price tag.

Another phone that I didn’t mention in this poll but would be worthy to mention is the new Nokia 8 which is expected to be announced soon. So the Nokia brand has made a comeback with HMD. I bought their new Nokia 3 which is their more low end device and I was impressed with it’s quality. For being so cheap it still performs well. Can play high-end games even. One thing that’s a bit boring is how these new Nokia branded phones is coming with a almost full stock Android look. Which I find a bit uncreative for a comeback. They should work on creating their own user experience interface.

The new high-end Nokia 8 is expected to have Snapdragon 835, 4GB of ram, QHD Display, and maybe a 5.25″ screen size. 64GB built-in storage and 51GB available to the user. There is also a 12MP Zeiss optics camera which can shoot 4K video. As I have understood the front facing camera is also 12MP! Nokia 8 will probably be a bit cheaper than the other brands. A more OnePlus 5 pricing maybe around 500-600 euro. The other high end phones probably more at 700-900 euro. Nokia 8 is expected to be announced in London on August 16. We already have a mid-range Nokia phone called Nokia 6.

I expected something more exciting to be revealed with a new iPhone especially now when it’s completely 10year since the first but looks like they will disappoint many with their traffic light iPhone.

New Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Leaked Wallpapers!

Audio Version:

Soon the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will be released by Samsung. Here are 13 official HD wallpapers leaked. These wallpapers will be inside the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. Most of them seems to be of a very calm theme one is showing an ocean, another some mountains and a third some clouds. If you wanna see them all hit up the download link: Click Here!

Expectations!

So what’s the deal with the Samsung Galaxy Note 8 anyway? What can we expect? The latest phone we saw from Samsung in the Note series was the brand new Samsung Galaxy Note FE. Which isn’t actually that new other than having an updated safer battery. After the Galaxy Note 7 battery issue that made Samsung haven’t to stop selling the Note 7 they made a massive loss of money. And they suddenly had a bunch of spare Note 7 parts they couldn’t sell! So they created the Note FE.

But what about the Note 8? What is different if we compare the Note 8 vs. Note FE? Let’s see what the rumors are saying.

The first thing that is different is that Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will have a 6.3″ display vs. Note FE’s 5.7″ display. They both have very similar ppi pixel density over 500+. And they both have Gorilla Glass 5 screen protection. The Note 8 is rumored to have 6GB of ram instead of Note FE’s 4GB ram. So 2GB higher! Also the Note 8 is expected to have a 8MP front facing camera which is better than Note FE that only has 5MP. Note 8 is expected to have 3300mAh battery so 100mAh higher than Note FE. Samsung Galaxy Note 7 had 3500mAh.

But the biggest difference of all is of course the price where the new Note 8 will cost around 30% higher than the Note FE. Will it really be worth it? We had some rumors that maybe we would see a 256GB Note 8 but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore! The max seems to be 128GB Internal of storage with 6GB of ram.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 will have 1 big difference that can make it worth the upgrade from the Note FE. And that is a brand new dual-camera setup with OIS. One thing that will keep be annoying on the Note 8 is the placement of the fingerprint sensor. Which is still located at the side of the camera. On the Galaxy S8 it is also and it’s very hard to unlock without getting errors. Because you misplace your finger.

What is the solution on the fingerprint placement problem for Samsung? The solution is in the Galaxy S9 put it below the camera! Just as the Huawei Mate 9 and the LG G6 is doing! Much better placement. And it always works as it should. Actually Mate 9 is a bit sharper than G6 because the fingerprint sensor points in a bit. Kinda like a golf sand wedge! Or maybe not really..

So will the Note 8 truly be worth it’s price or will it be better to pick up a Note FE? We have to wait and see. Samsung is expected to announce the Note 8 at it’s Unpacked event in New York City on August 23. LG will also be ready to bring out a new sharp phone in August called the LG V30. So these next couple of months will be very exciting. We also have the new Sony Xperia XZ1 that just recently got leaked. And soon the iPhone 8 that also will be announced in the upcoming months.

In short, this is a bad time to buy a phone! Sell your old one fast and get ready for the new stuff.

But wait a second doesn’t Samsung already have a phone that kinda reminds about the Note 8 already? Yes they do and it’s called the S8+. The S8+ features a 6.2″ display and seems like the Note 8 will use the same CPU as that one, Exynos 8895 Octa-core. But the big difference will be that the S8+ is big but doesn’t have an S-Pen! The S8+ also do not have a dual-camera. But it’s interesting how the S8+ features a 3500mAh battery and the new Note 8 may only get a 3300mAh.

Which of course is a bit sad. Samsung has been a bit confusing this year with how many products they have been releasing. For example the new J5 that many times felt more premium than the new A5 2017. But the J5 was cheaper and featured a more updated Samsung UX! Which was very confusing for Samsung customers.

I am still very excited for the Galaxy Note 8 launch. Last year I was just about to buy the Note 7 but then they cancelled the device! They never released a Note 6 named phone which was confusing. But a Note 5 phone which I picked up and with just a 1 meter drop the back glass got smashed.. Which is a big problem with new Samsung devices. Stop using glass on the back! Apple learned their lesson and stopped using glass on back 2012 with the iPhone 5. Oh the nightmares with the broken glass on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S…

One main thing I hope with the Note 8 is that they try to make something special with the UI. To make the Note series stand out from the Galaxy series. Maybe more S-Pen features. Or just an improved S-Pen in general. I’m disappointed other companies haven’t tried to bring out a cool Stylus phone. Apple should do it! LG should do it! Sony should do it! I love the stylus!

Also not all Samsung Galaxy Note 8’s will be using Exynos 8895. But in other regions it will be using Snapdragon 835. Just as we saw with Galaxy S8. It is also the same processor as the brand new OnePlus 5 is using. It’s probably going to be running Android 7.1.1 Nougat. Google is working on their new Android OS called Android O. But the Note 8 will probably not come shipped with that. Hopefully you will be able to buy the Note 8 already in September. Samsung usually seems to make a phone available in around a month after the announcement.

Any phone you want me to compare it too? iPhone 7 Plus probably! Apple please do a stylus phone. It will be a success! Steve Jobs never liked the stylus and yes with Windows Mobile it was kind of lame. But Samsung 2011 with the original Galaxy Note actually made a huge success with bringing back the stylus and making it cool again.

Adrian

Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 – Review

Audio Version:

The new Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 Edition I really do enjoy because of it’s premium build quality. The aluminium unibody is really a nice step up from the boring plastic feel from Galaxy J5 2016. This new model feels more like Samsung’s A5 series. Which always has been a bit more premium feel segment.

The last year’s A5 was kinda in a bad shape I think. I hated the glass back, Samsung still have glass back on the new 2017 edition but it is way more smooth rounded on A5 this year. Which makes it feel better.

But the new J5’s aluminium unibody feels even better! And it’s the perfect material if you would drop the device by accident. Because there is no glass back that would break as with the A5 series.

This phone comes packed with the latest Samsung UX, and Android 7.0. Which means it has some UI features designed the same way as the high-end Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 Plus. The display is fairly large at 5.2″ with 720p Super AMOLED Screen. I’m not sure if I enjoy that. Even the cheaper phones constantly getting bigger. I would like to see more phones at 4.3″ again as the Galaxy S2 had.

The J5 has a fingerprint reader and Samsung Pay. The chipset is also good; Exynos 7870, 14nm: octa-core 1.6GHz Cortex-A53 CPU. The GPU is Mali-T830MP2. The Mali GPU performs well with Android’s GTA games. The camera is primary 13MP and a secondary 13MP as well. And Samsung is delivering good quality with the camera!

There are some bad things you still have the old microUSB port so it charges slower. And no Always-on Display feature, the A5 series have Always-on Display. And some people think 16GB is too low these days.

But then again this device is a mid-range smartphone. And of course you cannot remove the battery. The good old days with that feature with Samsung phones is more disappearing. You also don’t get a notification LED for new messages.

How does this phone compare to other popular phones? I have done some videos like Samsung Galaxy J5 2017 vs. Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 and there is very little difference between them. A5 Glass Back, J5 Aluminium. A5 IP68 Water and Dust resistant, J5 no IP-rating! A5 Always-on Display so you can see notifications even when the display is turned off, J5 no feature like that so you have to wake up the device old school way.

Is there any good cases available for the J5 2017 edition? Yes in fact Spigen premium case maker have made two nice cases. One is called Liquid Crystal. This case is a see through case. If you want a clarity case. If you want a case with better grip they have also released a case called Liquid Air Armor which is using a premium TPU layer.

How does the J5 compare against Samsung Galaxy S8? S8 got 570 ppi pixel density, almost double the J5’s 282 ppi. S8 is using Exynos 8895 and it’s Geekbench score is 6375 in multi-core. The J5 global is getting 3766 in multi-core. So the S8 is around double in terms of processor speed. S8 will come with Samsung DeX (desktop experience support). You need to buy a external gadget for around 100 euro to get DeX. It will turn your phone a bit into a laptop by using a bigger display. S8 also has faster battery charging (Quick Charge 2.0 with Type-C 1.0).

Then S8 has IP68 certification just as the A5 series. One of the big difference is how S8 comes with 64GB internal storage and 4GB ram. The only J5 2017 that comes close is the J5 Pro which has 3GB ram and 32GB storage. But the standard J5 the global edition comes with only 16GB of storage and 2GB of ram. So you will only be able to install a couple of high-end games like GTA San Andreas.

S8 also has a more beautiful edge-to-edge display and slimmer in width which gives it a more premium feel. But it also has a badly placed fingerprint sensor on the back which many times won’t recognise your finger. Or it can be hard to reach it. With the J5 the fingerprint reader is on the front so easier to get it right the first time.

It is also true that the Galaxy S8 has 4K video recording capabilities and some other features. But really who records video in 4K that much? The J5 can record in Full HD. The S8 cost almost 3-4x as much depending on the region you live in. Is it really worth it? The J5 is a great deal for the price it cost. I’m glad Samsung has brought out such a premium device at such an amazing price range.

It is even cheaper than when Samsung released the Galaxy S4 Mini for around 350 euro a couple of years back.

In terms of build quality as you can see my Galaxy S8 from a drop test the glass got shattered very badly. If it would have been a drop test with the J5 the back wouldn’t have gotten destroyed. So you even get a overall better build quality on the J5 it’s amazing. The S8 features Gorilla Glass 5 on front that might be stronger than the J5’s front. But if you buy a screen protector for J5 you can get decent protection fast.

Overall there is very little to complain about with this phone. I just want to say that Samsung did a really good job here. And I hope it won’t start to lag 6 months in. As Samsung’s Galaxy S6 lineup has suffered lot’s of problems with software that is slow.

Even my S8’s software is pretty badly optimised and I can detect lag in the photo gallery app. I hope Samsung works out their hardware and software failures which happens from time to time. Like with the Note 7 fiasco.

Best Regards,

Adrian
