Today I want to talk about a very cool fast wireless charger I found! It’s a wireless charger that comes on a nice desktop stand. You can put your iPhone X / iPhone 8 or Samsung Galaxy S8 on it! As you may know the latest iPhones supports wireless charging. Let’s have a look at the specs here.
Specs: Qi Tech, 2 Coils, Wireless, 10W working power, Aluminium alloy material + PC + Anti-slipped pad, Silver colour, 9V1.67A / 5V2A Input, 9V1.2A / 5V1A Output, 5mm Working distance and 132x90x70mm in size.
You can see that this desktop stand has a pretty standard modern design! It takes around 2.5 hours for a full charge! My Samsung Galaxy S8 takes around 1,5 hours charging when it’s with standard fast charge cable. And if I turn off the phone it will take around 50 minutes.
So this one will take around 3x as long as a turned off phone. This may not be the best solution for most people but if you just need a tiny charge when you just don’t use your phone then it’s a great idea with a charging stand like this.
It also has nice built-in protection for things like short-circuit. The stand definitely have a iMac/MacBook aluminium design feel so will look great with Apple devices.
Another great thing with this stand is how you can put phone in both landscape and portrait modes. Good if you want to watch a movie! It’s compatible with the latest high end Samsung phones down to Galaxy S6 & S6 Edge. The visual-angle is made with ergonomics in mind.
The cable on the back of the stand may look a bit ugly and might be hard to hide on a slim desk. I think most people that doesn’t even have a wireless charging phone can enjoy this desktop phone stand!
Apple has today unveiled three new iPhone. I already have talked about the previous iPhone X which is the most high-end new iPhone with a brand new design for the front.
Let’s talk about the new iPhone 8. The first thing that is a major change is how Apple is going back to a glass design and aluminium frame on both new iPhone 8. And we talk about a full glass back here just as with iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. Yes that one who did break a lot! On the other hand Apple say this is having the most durable glass protection in a smartphone. Let’s see if that’s true…
It also features Apple’s latest A11 Bionic chipset, 64-Bit six-core CPU with four high-efficiency cores and two performance cores. The GPU for gaming and other graphic intense work is 30% faster than the A10.
You also on the back have the new 12 MP sensor and OIS on standard iPhone 8. It doesn’t sport a new camera design as on the iPhone X. The iPhone 8 Plus get a new Dual 12 MP sensor with f/1.8 and f/2.4. There is also some new filters included. New iPhone 8 also supports 1080p video slow motion record at 240 fps.
Stereo speakers 25% louder than the iPhone 7. Wireless charging also supported with Qi charging standard.
You can start to pre-order the new iPhone 8 and 8 Plus on September 15 and on sale will begin on September 22. Colours will be Space Gray, Gold and Silver. 64GB or 256GB will be available. And the iPhone 8 will only start at $699 which is good news. The 8 Plus starts at $799.
So will be iPhone 8 be worth it if you have a iPhone 7? Not really from what I can see. An annoying glass back that can break at anytime, wireless charging that nobody will use, maybe an updated camera but is it really that much better, at least you still have a Touch ID on iPhone 8 still left. In iPhone X they completely removed it!
So how does it stack up versus the Samsung Galaxy S8? So I’ve been using the Galaxy S8 for quite some time now as my main phone so I have a pretty good idea how it overall is.
So firstly the Apple iPhone 8 is rumored to come with a borderless Display. A display that might even go full up to the top and bottom of the phone! So Samsung already have a bezel less display when it comes to the sides. But the Galaxy S8 still doesn’t have a full bezel less display on the front. The AMOLED display doesn’t go fully up all the way to the top or bottom. The iPhone 8 might then have less bezel than Galaxy S8.
Second thing is how it’s rumored that iPhone 8 will switch to an OLED display away from LCD they been using on previous iPhones. As we know Samsung has been using an amazing AMOLED display for many years! Displays that offers way more vibrant exciting colors especially for looking at photos or video. It’s not that the current iPhone 7 display is super bad. But I really believe Apple will be able to compete better against Samsung with an OLED display. Attracting some Samsung customers maybe even.
The iPhone 8 looks like it will finally get facial recognition! They may call it Face ID. I use this feature already on my S8 and love it. It works almost every time in standard light. But in darkness many times it doesn’t work. But. There is a big bad thing with the iPhone 8.
And that is it may remove the fingerprint sensor that they call Touch ID. Which is a bad thing! I wouldn’t wanna live with a phone that doesn’t have a fingerprint sensor. Because it’s one of the better ways to unlock a phone safe and always works with the right finger.
The face unlock may not work sometimes for me on Galaxy S8 so then I quickly use the fingerprint sensor. But if the iPhone 8 won’t have that then you will have to type the password using the keyboard when Face ID doesn’t work! How annoying.
Samsung’s camera’s are Awesome!
We also have some rumors that the iPhone 8 camera will be able to record in 4K 60fps maybe on both rear and front camera! Which is insane. It will sure take up lots of space in your phone. I have always found the iPhone cameras inferior to Samsung’s main cameras. At least since the Galaxy S3. Samsung seems to know what they are doing in that area.
My iPhone 7 camera has horrible field of view and blurry photos while zoom in vs. Samsung’s high quality camera sensor. Maybe it’s just me. But I don’t think so. Samsung does a really good job on hardware area! More less good on software optimisation…
We also have rumor about iPhone 8 that it will support wireless charging. Which of course is interesting for Apple fans. But the charger will probably cost €149 if I know Apple correct..
Now Samsung has been having wireless charging for years. But I don’t think it’s in widespread use. Because wireless charging usually charges slower. So it sort of becomes no point doing it for most. Some wireless chargers takes hours to charge your device! Which is boring.
Traffic Light iPhone!
The iPhone 8 is also probably going to feature a traffic light camera! It looks really stupid to be honest. And it will add weird weight on one side of the phone. They should remove the camera bump all together!
Samsung’s Galaxy S8 has a camera but it doesn’t stick out! So why does Apple’s have to do it? I think Apple has become a bit lazy after Steve Jobs passed away. Steve Jobs had so amazing visions but when the founder goes away usually it becomes more about the money and less about doing creative amazing solutions. This traffic light is just an annoying design!
Seems like Apple will go back to an all glass design. Which is bad. We already know about the broken glass on iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S. And Samsung is also using glass back mine got smashed fast. It’s annoying. But I’m sure the companies do it just for the money. That they want your device to get broken. Because with glass what happens is you have to replace the whole back.
We are expecting to see three new iPhone 8 variants. One with OLED display the other two with standard LCD display. Galaxy S8 variants is available in S8 and S8+ variant and both feature same AMOLED display. The bad part here is the OLED iPhone 8 will probably be super expensive. So many will go with the standard editions.
Water Resistant (Hopefully Improvement over iPhone 7!)
I really hope the iPhone 8 has IP68 water resistant certification the IP-rating the iPhone 7 had was bad. I got two of them and they became unusable after Coca-Cola and water tests. They really must do a better job with the iPhone 8. The interesting part is how the new iPhone seems like it will be around same size as 4.7″ iPhone 7 but with a display of 5.5″ iPhone 7! Which is amazing. Because the iPhone 7 5.5″ really is too big. Feels like an elephant!
In processor we are going to get a brand new A11 chipset. Which I’m sure will perform well against Samsung’s Snapdragon 835/Exynos 8895 setup. Samsung also has amazing performance but the problem with Android is game and app optimisation usually is worse than Apple’s locked iOS system. Usually Apple optimise stuff better with using better software and optimising it.
Expensive oh no!
The iPhone 8 OLED variant is rumored to be costing around $1,000 which is laughable and so expensive. But then again people gonna pay…
From what I have seen on mockup photos of the new glass iPhone 8 it does remind me about the iPhone 3GS but less rounded. Which is funny. Feels like we are going back in time. Hopefully the device will be a bit slimmer but don’t hope for a major change compared to iPhone 7! I hope the iPhone 8 can be as thin and same width or smaller as the standard Galaxy S8. Because then it will feel a bit premium.
We are going to have to wait and see. Apple is expected to announce the 3 new iPhone models at a September event. So stay tuned for that.
